Sara Biren's A Cold Day in the Sun meets Yamile Saied Méndez's Furia in a powerful story of determination and compassion, set just miles from the border in San Diego, California

Sixteen-year-old Catalina Sullivan Murillo is a dreamer. Born into a Mexican/Irish-American family, she struggles to understand where she belongs. Is it with her nearly all-boy hockey team in the suburbs who call her "Sully"? Or with her friends in the barrio who know her family can't afford hockey dues, much less college tuition in the next two years?

As Cata enters her junior year of high school, she dreams of winning a hockey scholarship at a D1 university—but they only have a men’s team. Someone has to take down the patriarchy, right?  When an elite Canadian athlete joins her high school team, threatening her hockey dreams, Cata must be more careful than ever about keeping her hockey world separate from her homelife. After all, she's brimming with secrets that would destroy her chances of achieving the American Dream.
